Inherited from Proto-Slavic *luňь. Cognate with Russian лунь (lunʹ, harrier), Church Slavonic лунь (lunĭ, vulture), Serbo-Croatian type of kite (bird), Slovene lȗnj (kite (bird)), Czech luňak (kite (bird)). Per Vasmer, possibly from earlier *lupňь from Proto-Slavic *lupiti (to peel).
