From леш (leš, carrion) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ яд (jad, eater), with specialization of meaning specifically to birds scavengers. Compare Macedonian лешинар (lešinar, vulture), Serbo-Croatian лѐшина̄р (vulture).
