From *kӧpük "foam", from Proto-Turkic *köp- (to swell, surge). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (köpük, foam), Bashkir күбек (kübek), Kyrgyz көбүк (köbük), Kazakh көбік (köbık), Shor кӧбӱк, Uzbek ko'pik, Uyghur كۆپۈك (köpük), Azerbaijani köpük, Turkish köpük, Tuvan көвүк (kövük, foam), etc.
