Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kȫkerčin (dove, pigeon),[1] equivalent to кӑвакар (kăvak̬ar, to become blue) + -чӑн (-čăn).

Cognate with Khalaj kö̂kərçik, Turkish güvercin, Bashkir күгәрсен (kügərsen) and Tuvan көгээзин (kögeezin).
