[edit]From *qūrut / *qūrt (“cheese in round balls”), from Proto-Turkic *kūrï- (“dry”).
Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (qurut, “qurut”); Tatar корт (qort), Kazakh құрт (qūrt), Kyrgyz курут (kurut), Uzbek qurt, Turkmen gurt, Khakas хурут (xurut), Tuvan курут (kurut, “dried cheese”).
