Probably borrowed from a Turkic language (compare Bashkir көрән (körən) and Kyrgyz күрөң (küröŋ)), ultimately a Mongolic borrowing (compare Mongolian хүрэн (xüren)). Cognates include Eastern Mari кӱрен (küren) and Western Mari кӹрӓн (kÿrän).
