From Proto-Selkup *kulä, from Proto-Samoyedic *kuləjə, from Proto-Uralic *kule.

Related to Hungarian holló. Cognates include Kamassian кхули (kʰuli), Northern Selkup кӱлӓ and Tundra Nenets хулы (xuli).
