[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *krečetъ, perhaps of imitative Proto-Indo-European origin (see Ancient Greek κρέξ (kréx, “corncrake”)).[1] Compare Ancient Greek κέρκνος (kérknos, “a Hierax or an Alektryon”).
