Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic кочевати (kočevati), a Turkic borrowing, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *köč-. Contains the suffix -ева́ть (-evátʹ). Compare also Belarusian качаваць (kačavacʹ), Ukrainian кочувати (kočuvaty), Czech kočovat, Slovak kočovať, Polish koczować.
