[edit]Simplified from an earlier карчи́чек (karčíček), borrowed from dialectal Ottoman Turkish كارچیچیك (karçiçek, “snow flower”). Possibly influenced by Greek κόκκος (kókkos, “speck, grain”), whence dialectal Bulgarian коки́чка (kokíčka, “kernel”).
