Inherited from Old East Slavic колпакъ (kolpakŭ), derived from a Turkic source. Compare Belarusian каўпа́к (kaŭpák), Russian колпа́к (kolpák), Bashkir ҡалпаҡ (qalpaq), Tatar калфак (qalfaq), Kazakh қалпақ (qalpaq), Uzbek qalpoq, Turkish kalpak (cap).
