Inherited from Old East Slavic кользъкъ (kolĭzŭkŭ), from Proto-Slavic *kъlzъkъ. By surface analysis, ковз- (kovz-) +‎ -кий (-kyj). Cognates include Czech kluzký, Polish kiełzki, Belarusian ко́ўзкі (kóŭzki), (dialectal) Russian ко́льзкий (kólʹzkij), Russian ско́льзкий (skólʹzkij).
