From Proto-Samic *koδētēk, from Proto-Finno-Permic *kuδa-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewdʰ-, from the root *h₂ew-. Cognates include Northern Sami gođđit, Finnish kutoa, Udmurt куыны (kuyny).
