[edit]Borrowed from Greek κέφαλος (kéfalos, “mullet; gray mullet”), from Ancient Greek κέφᾰλος (képhălos, “grey mullet”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰébʰōl (“head”).
Cognates include Turkish kefal, Russian кефа́ль (kefálʹ), Albanian qefull and Romanian chefal.
