From Proto-Turkic *kẹlin (bride, daughter-in-law), from Proto-Turkic *kẹl- (to come) with the suffix Proto-Turkic *-in (derives nouns from intransitive verbs). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰚𐰠𐰤 (kl²n²), Azerbaijani gəlin, Turkmen gelin, Turkish gelin, Kyrgyz келин (kelin), Uzbek kelin.
