From Proto-Turkic *gē(j)t- (to go (away), to get away). Cognate to Turkish gitmek, Uzbek ketmoq, Crimean Tatar ketmek, Kumyk гетмек (getmek), Kazakh кету (ketu), Nogai кетуьв (ketüv), Azerbaijani getmək, Gagauz gitmää, Turkmen gitmek, Bashkir китеү (kitew), etc.
