Borrowed from French catafalque, from Italian catafalco, from Vulgar Latin *catafalicum (whence ultimately also эшафо́т (ešafót) (a doublet), English scaffold), probably derived from Ancient Greek κατά (katá, down) + Latin fala (scaffolding, wooden siege tower).
