[edit]From *qaraqat (“(black) currant”), composed of Proto-Turkic *kara (“black”) + (<Proto-Turkic *kat (“berry”). Cognate with Bashkir ҡарағат (qarağat), Kyrgyz караңат (karaŋat, “black currant”), Uzbek qoragʻat, Azerbaijani qarağat (“currant”), Uyghur قارىقات (qariqat, “black currant”), Khakas харағат (xarağat, “black currant”), etc.
