Etymology

From *qaraqat ((black) currant), composed of Proto-Turkic *kara (black) + (<Proto-Turkic *kat (berry). Cognate with Bashkir ҡарағат (qarağat), Kyrgyz караңат (karaŋat, black currant), Uzbek qoragʻat, Azerbaijani qarağat (currant), Uyghur قارىقات (qariqat, black currant), Khakas харағат (xarağat, black currant), etc.
