From Common Turkic *yumšaq (soft), from Proto-Turkic *yɨm-ĺča-k (soft).

Cognate with Old Uyghur jumšaq (soft); Tatar йомшак (yomşaq), Kazakh жұмсақ (jūmsaq), Kyrgyz жумшак (jumşak), Southern Altai јымжак (ǰïmžak), Turkish yumuşak, Khakas нымзах (nımzax), Tuvan чымчак (çımçak), Yakut сымна (sımna), сымнаҕас (sımnağas), Chuvash ҫемҫе (śemś̬e, soft), etc.
