Unclear. Perhaps an alteration of единоро́г (jedinoróg, unicorn); alternatively, perhaps from the Slavic transliteration of an animal name (Ancient Greek ἔνυδρις (énudris, otter) or ὕδρωψ (húdrōps, water beast, aurochs)) in the Physiologus.
