From Arabic زِيَارَة (ziyāra, visiting (a saint's grave)).

Cognate with Kazakh зиярат (ziärat), Kyrgyz зыярат (zıyarat), Uzbek ziyorat (pilgrimage), etc.

The original meaning was "pilgrimage to a Muslim saint's grave".
