[edit]- (dialect) зейти́н (zejtín)
- (Eastern) зийти́н (zijtín), (Asia Minor and Göbel Bulgarian) зити́н (zitín), (Shipka) зайти́н (zajtín)
Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish زیتین (zeytin, “olive”), from Arabic زَيْتُون (zaytūn, “olive”).
The -х takes the place of the expected -й- by way of excessively careful pronunciation (Bulgarian: свръхстарателност (svrǎhstaratelnost)), according to Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary. Compare Bulgarian зейтин (zejtin), as well as Macedonian зејтин (zejtin) and Serbo-Croatian zejtin, where this change does not occur.
