[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *zarokъ. Deverbal from early Proto-Slavic *zarekti (later *zareťi), with Indo-European ablaut typical of nouns. Compare заре́чь (zaréčʹ, “to prohibit, to force to renounce”), заре́чься (zaréčʹsja, “to renounce, to forswear”).
