Verb

[edit]

запи́кать (zapíkatʹpf

  1. to start beeping (making a short squeak)
  2. to bleep out inappopriate words (most often expletive words) by using a bleep censor over them (usually a 1000 Hz tone sound)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The verb запи́кать in modern Russian is mostly used in sense 2 as in colloquial as the use of the bleep censor for censoring out expletive words on the television and radio broadcasting in Russia and post-Soviet states is a very common thing since the early 1990s as well as the noun запи́кивание. Since April 2013, the use of expletive words in Russian mass media has been prohibited by national law, and as a result, Russian mass media now have to censor out from audio and video before being published out.
