From Old Church Slavonic жладьба (žladĭba) with colloquial assimilation of -дб- → -дв-, from Proto-Slavic *žеldьba. Morphologically equivalent to жла́дя (žládja, to pay) (obsolete, archaic) +‎ -ба (-ba).
