From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gḗlˀis, *gḗlˀāˀ, akin to Proto-Slavic *žalь and Czech žel. Academician B. A. Rybakov, following S. A. Gedeonov, compared Желя from "The Tale of Igor's Campaign" with the Czech goddess Zelu.
