[edit]Borrowed from Kazakh домбыра (dombyra), from Persian دنب بره (donb-e barre, literally “lamb's tail”). Related to Ottoman Turkish طنبوره (tanbura/tambura), Turkish tambura, Romanian tambură, Arabic طُنْبُور (ṭunbūr), etc.
Doublet of до́мра (dómra) and танбу́р (tanbúr).
