Per Vasmer, from до́лгий (dólgij) +‎ -о- (-o-) + Proto-Slavic *vęzъ (neck) (cognate with Czech vaz (neck), dialectal Russian вязы (vjazy, neck)) + -ый (-yj). Compare Belarusian даўгавя́зы (daŭhavjázy).
