Inherited from Old Slovak dvojo, from Proto-Slavic *dъvojь. Cognates include Carpathian Rusyn дво́є (dvóje) and Slovak dvoje.

Usage notes

  • Only the plural form двої (dvoji) is used with most plural-only nouns. However, for describing young animals (including дзеци (dzeci)), двойо (dvojo) is used. Regardless, the two forms are both declined as plural adjectives in oblique cases.
  • The form двоме (dvome) is used with masculine personal nouns, for instance двоме браца (dvome braca, two brothers).
