Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *gulьja, cognate with Russian гулья (gulʹja, swelling) (dialectal), Ukrainian гуля (hulja, swelling) (dialectal), Slovak huľa (ball). Formed from the same root as Bulgarian жу́ля (žúlja, to rub), with the collective marker -ия (-ija).
