Etymology

Possibly a blend of Old Church Slavonic грътань (grŭtanĭ) +‎ гъ́рло (gǎ́rlo), which would yield *гъртлан (compare dialectal Romanian gîrtlan), and then a dialectal change of -тл- > -кл-. Cognates include Macedonian грклан (grklan), Serbo-Croatian гр̀кљан, Lithuanian gurklỹs (neck) and Old Prussian gurcle (throat).
