[edit]Originally Russian word formed from the onomatopoeia гра (gra) + -ач (-ač). Cf. ка́ркать (kárkatʹ) and other similar words with onomatopoeic origin, such as Ukrainian грак (hrak, “rook”) and крук (kruk, “raven”).
