[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic *голье (*golĭje), from Proto-Slavic *golьje, from *golь, from *golъ.[1][2][3][4][5] By surface analysis, голь (holʹ, “branch”) + -ье (-ʹje). Cognate with Russian гольё (golʹjó), dialectal голья́ (golʹjá), Middle Russian голье (golʹje), since the 17th century, Slovene goljè.
