[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic гоголь (gogolĭ), from Proto-Slavic *gogoľь, from *gogolъ, possibly from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gagalas, probably of onomatopoeic origin.[1][2][3][4] Cognate with Russian го́голь (gógolʹ).
