[edit]From глиг (glig, “fang”) + -а́н (-án, augmenative suffix), from Old Church Slavonic глъıгъ (glŭıgŭ), in turn from Proto-Slavic *kъlъ (“fang, tusk”). Cognate with the verb ко́ля (kólja, “to butcher”), Russian клык (klyk), Polish kieł, Czech kel, Serbo-Croatian каљак, Slovene kȅl.
