галка
Appearance
Russian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *galъka, from *galъ (“black, black-colored bird”) + *-ъka (compare Russian -ка (-ka)). Cognate with Bulgarian гал (gal, “jackdaw”), dialectal Macedonian гал (gal, “raven”), archaic Serbo-Croatian га̏о (“black, dirty”) (fem. sg. га̏ла, neut. sg. га̏ло), га̑л (“black color”), Slovene gàl (“bird with black feathers”), dialectal Czech gáł (“dirt; large black peas”).
Pronunciation

[edit]га́лка • (gálka) f anim or f inan (genitive га́лки, nominative plural га́лки, genitive plural га́лок, diminutive га́лочка)
- (animate) jackdaw, daw (Coloeus monedula)
- 1862, Иван Тургенев [Ivan Turgenev], “Глава 26”, in Отцы и дети; English translation from Richard Hare, transl., Fathers and Sons, 1947:
— skazál on Arkádiju, užé vzobrávšisʹ na telégu, i, ukazáv na páru gálok, sidévšix rjádyškom na krýše konjúšni, pribávil: — Vot tebé! izučáj!
— Éto što znáčit? — sprosíl Arkádij.
— Kak? Rázve ty tak plox v jestéstvennoj istórii íli zabýl, što gálka sámaja počténnaja, seméjnaja ptíca? Tebé primér!.. Proščájte, sinʹór! - "Farewell, brother," he called out to Arkady, as he was already climbing into the cart, and pointing to a pair of jackdaws, sitting side by side on the roof of the stables, he added, "There you are! Learn from the example."
"What does that mean?" asked Arkady.
"What? Are you so weak in natural history or have you forgotten that the jackdaw is a most respectable family bird! An example to you . . . ! Good-by."
- — Proščáj, brat! — skazál on Arkádiju, užé vzobrávšisʹ na telégu, i, ukazáv na páru gálok, sidévšix rjádyškom na krýše konjúšni, pribávil: — Vot tebé! izučáj!
