From Proto-Permic *vȯr, from Proto-Uralic *wëre (peak). Cognates include Finnish vuori (mountain, high hill) and possibly Hungarian orr (nose).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian вӧр (vör) and Udmurt выр (vyr).
