Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic вѣникъ (věnikŭ), from Proto-Slavic *věnikъ, from *věnъ (“wreath”) + *-ikъ, details of further origin unclear (possibly from Proto-Indo-European *woh₁y-nos or derived later) but ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (“to twist, wind, weave”).
Related to віне́ць (vinécʹ), віно́к (vinók), ви́ти (výty).
