[edit]From Proto-Samic *vuostē, from Proto-Uralic *wasta (“a place opposite or across”). Related to вӯсьт (vūs’t).
Cognates include Skolt Sami vuâstta, Ter Sami выэсста (vïesstâ) and Akkala Sami [script needed] (vosta).
