From Proto-Samic *oalulëš (with dissimilation of the second *l), from earlier *oalulë-, from Proto-Samic *oalōl, from Proto-Uralic *ola.

Cognates include Skolt Sami vuålˈl’lõš (later vuålˈlõš) and Akkala Sami vallaš.
