Bulgarian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Church Slavonic вощага (voštaga), of unclear origin. BER mentions (under its derivative въстегарка (vǎstegarka)):
- Possibly borrowed from some derivative of Ancient Greek βαστάζω (bastázō, “to bear, to lift”);
- Corrupted form of what would be въз- (vǎz-) + те́жа (téža, “to weigh”) + -а (-a) (one would expect a nasal vowel and no palatalization within the root in this case).
Compare also Lithuanian vazgóti (“to stretch”).
Noun
[edit]вощага • (voštaga) f (archaic)
Usage notes
[edit]Only derivatives are still used in the contemporary language.
Derived terms
[edit]- вощега́рин (voštegárin, “dotard, geezer”) (dialectal, slang)
- востега́рка (vostegárka), ластега́рка (lastegárka, “bar, beam, fastener”) (dialectal)
