Inherited from Old East Slavic воронъ (voronŭ, black), from Proto-Slavic *vornъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *warnás. Related to Russian воро́на (voróna, crow), Lithuanian var̃nas (crow, raven). Doublet of вран (vran), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
