Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic *волосьѥ (*volosĭje), from Proto-Slavic *volsьje, from *vȏlsъ.[1][2] By surface analysis, во́лосъ (vólos) +‎ -ье (-ʹje). Cognate with Middle Russian волосье (volosʹje), attested in the 17th century.
