Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic въжделение (vŭždelenie), from Old Church Slavonic въжделѣти (vŭždelěti), from въз- (vŭz-) +‎ желѣти (želěti). Compare возжела́ть (vozželátʹ). Related to Russian вожделе́ть (voždelétʹ, to lust, desire strongly), Russian жела́ть (želátʹ, to wish, to desire).
