Derived from a North Germanic language, compare Old Norse varta.

Cognate with Southern Sami vaahtere, Ume Sami [Term?] (vàrʿtoo), Pite Sami várrto, Lule Sami vártto, Northern Sami spártu, Inari Sami spárttu and Skolt Sami värtt.
