Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic вънѣ (vŭně). Cognate with вон (von), Slovene vənè (“outside”) (tonal orthography), vèn (“out”) (tonal orthography), Czech vně (“outside”), ven (“out”), Kashubian wnie (“outside”), wen (“out”). See вон (von) for further Slavic cognates. According to Vasmer, most likely related to Sanskrit वन (vána, “forest”), dialectal वने (váne, “in the forest”), although also sometimes compared with Sanskrit विना (vínā, “without, except for”), Old Prussian wins (“air”), winna (“outward”), winnen (“weather”, accusative).
