From early піля (pilja) < *підля (*pidlja) < *пюдлѧ (*pjudlja) < *пѡдлѣ (*pôdli), from Old Ruthenian подлѣ (podlě, near),[1] from Old East Slavic подьлѣ (podĭlě, by length), ultimately from по (po) +‎ дьлѣ (dĭlě), prefixed variant of Proto-Slavic *dьlь (length).[2]
