[edit]From early піля (pilja) < *підля (*pidlja) < *пюдлѧ (*pjudlja) < *пѡдлѣ (*pôdli), from Old Ruthenian подлѣ (podlě, “near”),[1] from Old East Slavic подьлѣ (podĭlě, “by length”), ultimately from по (po) + дьлѣ (dĭlě), prefixed variant of Proto-Slavic *dьlь (“length”).[2]
