From Proto-Slavic *bьrgъlъ, *bьrgъlězъ (nuthatch). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian бр̀глијез, Slovene bȓglez, Polish bargiel. Further akin to Russian берглéз (bergléz, goldfinch).
