Inherited from Proto-Slavic *brusьnica, from *brusьnъ + *-ica. Cognate with Czech brusnice, Slovak brusnica, Polish brusznica, Serbo-Croatian brùsnica, Slovene brusníca, Bulgarian брусни́ца (brusníca), and more distantly with Lithuanian brùknė and Latvian brūklene.
