Bulgarian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unclear. Lacks exact correspondences in other Slavic languages, however, formally matches Romanian brei (“dog's mercury”) (possibly borrowed or cognate to the Bulgarian word).
- Per Mladenov: Related to obsolete Bulgarian бри́я (bríja, “to shave”);
- Per Georgiev: Possibly akin to Ancient Greek βρῠ́ον (brúon, “moss”), deemed phonetically problematic.
